Abstract
Abstract
This paper presents a concise yet critical exploration of du‘a supplication
within the Islamic tradition, with particular emphasis on Shi'a theology. It
investigates du‘a as more than a verbal plea—framing it as an expression
of servitude ‘ubudiyyah, monotheism tawhīd, and a spiritual pursuit of
nearness to God. Drawing on Qur’anic verses and the teachings of the
Ma‘sūmīn Infallible Imams from the Ahl al-Bayt, the study examines the
psychological, spiritual, and transformative effects of supplication on
human consciousness. Engaging both classical and modern intellectual
traditions, the paper incorporates perspectives from thinkers such as Rumi
and Allama Iqbal to broaden the conceptual depth of du‘a. It also analyzes
the interplay between supplication and divine decree qadā wa qadar,
addressing theological questions about free will, determinism, and the
apparent non-acceptance of prayers. Through this multifaceted lens, the
study positions du‘a as a deeply spiritual and philosophical act that bridges
the human-divine relationship.
