Abstract:
This paper presents a critical analysis of scientism—the epistemological
stance that elevates science as the sole arbiter of truth—and examines its
foundational role in shaping contemporary atheism. The study opens with
a justification for investigating scientism, followed by a clear distinction
between science as a methodological enterprise and scientism as a
philosophical claim. The conceptual boundaries and limitations of the
scientific method are delineated, emphasizing the importance of not
conflating scientific practice with broader metaphysical assumptions.
Drawing upon the views of prominent atheist thinkers, the paper argues
that modern atheism is deeply rooted in scientism. It further demonstrates
that scientism is not without contestation; it has been subject to criticism
by members of the scientific community, atheist philosophers, and other
intellectuals. The paper highlights how modern atheists frequently
misrepresent science by projecting scientistic assumptions as intrinsic
to scientific inquiry. Moreover, the analysis reveals that scientism is
inherently self-refuting and philosophically untenable. It lacks coherent
epistemological justification and fails to provide sound arguments for its
exclusive claim to knowledge. Instead, it relies disproportionately on the
technological successes of science to legitimize itself, committing several
logical fallacies in the process. In doing so, scientism reveals itself to be not
only philosophically impoverished but also epistemically incoherent.
